Fishing was good today. We waded mud bottom along oyster reefs and found redfish and speckled trout under schools of mullet. 5″ Gulp jerk shad were the ticket on 1/16 ounce lead heads. Redfish were very shallow over shell and the trout were on the edge over mud bottom. Book a day of fishing and enjoy a day on the bays near Rockport.

We were back on redfish and trout today and waded in mixed mud and shell along a shell reef. Gulp 3″ shrimp in New Penny color was the trick.

We fished for speckled trout in San Antonio Bay. The wind came about 9:00 AM and the trout turned on. They were on the deep side of shell reefs in 4 to 5 feet of water. The trout were hot on Gulp jerk shad for about 3 hours.

We drifted shallow Port bay for trout and redfish using Gulp jerk shad. The trout up to 22 ” were under schools of bait and the fishing was steady. In this bay wading is tough due to the soft mud. Redfish were on shell bars and shell and mud. Tout were with schools of bait. They all wanted the bait moved slowly. The bite was light.

We waded for redfish and black drum today and caught several nice fish. The best came from a slough which had an out flow from a back lake, Salt water assassins and gulps were the baits of choice.

Fishing was great today. The north wind was up and the redfish had moved up on the top of the oyster bars. We used 3″ Gulp shrimp in new penny and the redfish could not resist them.

We started the day to calm seas and a beautiful sunrise. Today the bait of choice was live shrimp under a popping cork. The action was fast for speckled trout but most were undersized. We also caught several lady fish (skip jack) which we kept for cut bait later. Mid morning we decided to look for some redfish. After a couple of undersized redfish, we found a school of nice redfish and the action was fast and furious for a couple of hours. We had several fish on at once and had all our lines tangled several times. Plus we lost a couple of nice fish on the oyster reef. The secret is the fresh cut lady fish. It is like candy to the redfish. Everyone caught fish and all had a great time. Some of filets were on there way to a local restaurant for the happy fishermen and fisher-women for dinner.

We made our annual trip to Alaska for the Silver Salmon run. We travel to Cordova, Alaska and fish several rivers in the Copper River drainage. It has become a tradition. This year a couple of friends went along. The fishing is all done in small rivers and with fly rods. It can be challenging but it is a great experience. The wildlife is great. (Bears (Brown & Black), Moose, and lots of birds). We fish several different streams or rivers during our stay. We base out of the “Orca Adventure Lodge” in Cordova and have for many years. They offer boat trips to remote rivers and streams as well as fly outs. Local streams and rivers are also great. We will post a few pictures in the “Orvis Shop” in Rockport, Texas near the Burger King. Stop by and have a look.

We fished the San Jose Island surf today and waded. The surf was perfect. We waded the first bar and cast top water plugs to the beach. The speckled trout were aggressive and plentiful. Plus a few big redfish. We ended up with 22 nice trout over 20 “. These were to be used for a local fish fry. None will go to waste. We did see one very large bull shark in the clear water. Keeping fish in the surf when wading is tricky. Always us a floating net bag not a stringer.

I fished the Cistic Fibrosis “Cast for the Cure” Tournament this weekend. We fished several spot that have been producing some nice redfish but came up with a zero. We caught and released over 100 keeper speckled trout during the two days but did not place because we did not catch a single redfish. That is the way tournaments are.
